New Model Press Release – Grand Complication
First off, let me state my personal thanks and those of all Timezoners to Messrs. Kern and Friedberg who so graciously allowed us access to these images and text well before the show launch.
Even greater diversity at the top
Together with the warhorse from Schaffhausen, the Il Destriero Scafusia model which sold out long ago, the Grande Complication marks the pinnacle of the IWC collection. Three new dial variants ensure even more choice at the very top.
This is a watch of superlatives: 659 individual parts, including 71 jewels, a perpetual calendar, a perpetual moon phase display, a chronograph and a minute repeater, which alone consumed 50 000 development hours. The Grande Complication from IWC International Watch Co. qualifies as one of the most intricate mechanical wristwatches in the world and is the most complicated currently in production in Schaffhausen – a maximum of 50 examples are built each year. Such an horological landmark is changed only very cautiously, if at all. The Solomonic decision taken by IWC management accordingly runs as follows: We stay on our proven path and add just a little more.
And so this is what we have done. As ever, the exquisite mechanism of the Grande Complication (Ref. 3770) is packaged only in fine cases made of 950-standard platinum or 18-carat yellow gold. New for the first time are three dial variants, one in yellow gold and two in platinum, with a modified dial and hands. In these three new variants, the hours and minutes are now indicated by Dauphine-style hands in the same colour as the case, and the remaining seven hands are slender bar hands.
The new variation in yellow gold is highly refined. It has a silver-plated dial with golden indices. The silvered dial is now also available in a platinum case. Blue indices are used here as a visual contrast, and these harmonize beautifully with the blue small second and second stop hands and the hands of the minutes and hours counters. Both models are supplied with a black crocodile leather strap.
The colours of the third new addition are very discreet. Here a black dial is combined with the lustrous shine of the platinum case. Even the moon phase display blends well into this harmony of colour. The choice of a black crocodile leather strap, or perhaps the solid platinum bracelet with its fine links, is a matter for the personal taste of the purchaser. Even with all this diversity of models, one thing remains the same: no more than 50 consecutively numbered examples of the Grande Complication will be made in the year 2003.
